Sail Training Queensland, a not-for-profit organisation, uses a sailing vessel (South Passage) to provide an educational experience that makes a difference in the lives of people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds.
South Passage is a uniquely ‘hands-on’ tall ship sailing experience, operating on Australia’s East Coast. Our dedicated team of volunteers and professional crew offer young people and adults an opportunity to participate in a safe sailing experience to develop leadership, initiative, teamwork, confidence, self-reliance and self-discipline.
From day sails to voyages, school trips and public events, South Passage engages volunteers and young people through a journey of growth and discovery that really does provide an Adventure under sail; and an Experience of a lifetime.
We have offered a unique educational experience to schools and community organisations from Cairns to Sydney for over 25 years. In a typical year, over 2,000 young people undertake voyages on our vessel in a focused way which requires perseverance and working in teams. Participants and their accompanying supervising teachers describe this experience as offering a positive learning environment that builds character, self-identity and personal growth.
